Prague is a city of many unusual sculptures. Those who have been there at least once have probably seen a monument to Kafka, a shop of vice or a man hanging over a busy street … On March 9, 2010, another amazing sculpture made of thousands of ordinary keys appeared in the Czech capital.
The sculptural composition, 6 meters high, is made of 85,741 steel keys and installed on Franz Kafka Square. It represents the word "Revoluce" and is dedicated to the "Velvet Revolution". Since during the revolution, students at demonstrations against the communist regime jingled keys, now, 20 years later, it was the keys that were chosen to create the original sculpture.
The sculpture was created by the Czech artist Jirí David. Here is what the author himself says about his creation: “The sculpture of keys is a kind of discussion about the development of the Czech Republic over the past 20 years. Of course, this is not a festive monument, but it is not an example of criticism either. The sculpture expresses the ambivalence that I have towards the processes taking place in modern society. " As conceived by the author, each letter in the sculpture reminds the inhabitants of the Czech Republic of the years of communism. And the main semantic load is carried by the letter R: on the one hand, it “crushes” all the other letters, but on the other hand, Jiri claims that “the moment the letter“R”falls, the“revolution”will turn into“evolution ".
The installation of the sculpture was supported by Vodafone, which organized the collection of the keys. For two months, people brought unnecessary keys to the company's offices throughout the country, from which the composition was then compiled. At the same time, on the website of Jiri David, there was a vote on the location of the sculpture. In total, people suggested more than 8 thousand possible places. And although the undisputed leader was Kafka Square in Prague, residents of other regions of the country showed a genuine interest in sculpture, therefore, in the future, a kind of mini-tour of works of art in the cities of Bohemia and Moravia is possible.
