Dance and photography - types of art that are completely different in nature, which is why it is often so difficult to capture the magic of body movements on a static image. As a rule, photographers manage to freeze a moment, to catch one of the many emotions, but a whole range of feelings is immediately left out of the frame. However, there are exceptions. For example, an American Bill Wadman - the author of incredible beauty photos of dancers. The project was named "Motion", its highlight is that all the pictures were taken using long exposures.
The photographs show nine dancers, the pictures not only got into such large magazines as The New York Times, La Monde, Der Spiegel, Times of London, USA Today and Corriere della Sera, etc., but also came out as a separate publication.
The project turned out to be experimental for Bill Wodman, as he was used to working in the portrait genre. Once the photographer had the opportunity to attend several lectures by Marvin Newman, a recognized master in the field of sports photography. Having familiarized himself with the intricacies of shooting with long exposure, the photographer "fired up" the idea of creating a similar series of photographs.
Initially, Bill Wodman decided to create a series of photographs, which would capture representatives of different professions, whose work is associated with movement. He supposed to shoot athletes, builders, cooks … The first dancers to take part in this experiment, the list ended on them, because the result was stunning.
Talking about collaboration with Bill Wodman, Amber Bogdewiecz (one of the nine dancers who took part in the photo project) notes that the photos turned out to be really fantastic, but the main difficulty in the work was finding the right rhythm for shooting, since the movements had to be performed a lot slower than usual during the dance.
American dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, speaking about the art of dance, has always emphasized: "The body never lies." Looking at the work of Bill Wodman, there is no doubt about the sincerity of the feelings and emotions that the photographer managed to convey. By the way, on our website Culturology. We have already written about other photographers who are trying to capture the magic of movement in a static image. Truly extraordinary are the photographs of dancing by Austrian Laurent Ziegler and Americans Lois Greenfield, as well as Jordan Matter.
