On the eve of spring, you want warmth, sun and fruit. In the town Menton there is an excellent tradition - to hold an annual festival with a self-explanatory name "Citron" … It seems that in such an original way the French are fighting seasonal depression and vitamin deficiency: they appear on the streets giant sculptures made from citrus fruits.
The city of Menton is not for nothing called the "capital of lemons", thanks to the warm climate, citrus fruits grow here all year round. Oranges, tangerines, lemons, limes and grapefruits - all this vitamin set is used by street artists in order to create huge sculptures. On the site Kulturologiya. RF we regularly talk about the French festival of vitamin C, so our regular readers will surely remember those amazing creations that the inhabitants of Menton have already surprised the world with.
This year, the 81st "lemon" celebration is taking place, and thousands of tourists will come here to admire the juicy and colorful works of art. It took 145 tons of fruit to create the sculptures, 300 specialists hand-laid each fruit.
The Citron 2014 theme is inspired by Jules Verne's science fiction novel 20 Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. First published in 1870, it is the story of the brave French naturalist Professor Pierre Aronnax, who went on an expedition to track down a sea monster, but instead got aboard the Nautilus, Captain Nemo's submarine. The underwater world, which the travelers got to know, was embodied by modern "fruit" sculptors.
Traditionally, the festival takes place from February 16 to March 5, visitors can see with their own eyes the legendary Captain Nemo, his submarine, as well as marine life - crabs, turtles and, of course, a giant whale!
By the way, fruit festivals are held not only in Menton, but also in Amsterdam, where Orange Day is also celebrated with enthusiasm.
