For some time now, a huge elephant has lived in New York's Union Square. More precisely, the elephant. Or, more precisely, the old elephant by the name Gran elefandret, because this is the name of the new sculpture by the Spanish author Miquel Barcelopresented to guests and New Yorkers by the Marlborough Art Gallery. So until spring, the 26-foot elephant will entertain all casual, and especially non-casual visitors to the Big Apple by being great at balancing, standing upside down and leaning solely on its own trunk. The acrobat elephant not only has grown tall, but also weighs about five tons, since it is made of bronze. Therefore, I dare to suggest that the author of the sculpture was repeatedly asked whether this wonderful structure would fall off its pedestal. To which the author, Miguel Barcelo, replied with a sly smile, they say, he really hopes for it.
In fact, an old elephant with tiredly hanging ears, spread legs and sagging skin on her stomach is firmly held in place by a multi-ton pedestal, into which a metal pipe is firmly embedded, disguised as a wrinkled trunk. So even though passers-by look up with caution, where Gran Elefandret sticks out, nothing threatens them. Even if a strong wind blows and rain, thunderstorm or hail falls on Union Square.
Until next May, Gran Elefandret will be decorating Union Square, so that cars will still slow down in front of the square to look at the outlandish statue, and passers-by will take pictures of it with their mobile phones or with specially taken cameras. By the way, the sculptor Rob Pruitt, who presented the statue of Andy Warhol to the public, also received his "15 minutes of fame" in the same square.
