Artist James Ng is a big travel lover. It is from his travels around the world that he draws inspiration to create illustrations that combine traditional Asian beauty with the Western sensibility of steampunk that invariably unites man and technology.
In our minds, steampunk is usually associated with Victorian England. What made James Ing turn to Asian themes? According to the author, he never heard of the concept of "steampunk" until he started posting his work on the network and read it in the comments. “My writing is based on my own interests, combined with the environment in which I grew up,” says James Ing. - I am very interested in the Chinese Qing dynasty and the modernization of non-European states. Usually modernization involves Westernization - and as China becomes more modern, it also becomes more Western. And I decided to assume: what would have happened if the process of modernization first took place in China, and all other countries would have been equal to it in the future? What would the modern world look like then?"
To the credit of James Ing, his works of art, made, by the way, exclusively with the help of a computer, are based on a serious theoretical basis. Before starting to create illustrations, the author read a huge number of books about Chinese history and the industrial revolution in England. “The more I understand these things, the better I can portray them,” says James Ing.
James Ing was born in Hong Kong, where he spent his childhood. The author currently lives in Vancouver, Canada, but is also very frequent in Chicago and New York. Graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. James Ing is now a freelancer, constantly traveling and never parting with his laptop.
