How do you imagine a typical biographical article? Several paragraphs of text that may be accompanied by photographs. And what will happen if these two elements - image and text - are combined with each other? Not so long ago, in the early 2000s, Ralph Ueltzhoeffer was puzzled by this question, and the answer was not long in coming: this is how a movement called the text portrait appeared in art.
A text portrait is a symbiosis of text and photography, biography and portrait. This is a version of the description and photograph of an ordinary portrait, with the only difference that the text (for example, a biography) and an image (for example, a passport photo) form an inseparable whole. The combination of two visually different components in a readable portrait will be called a text portrait. As already mentioned, at the origins of this direction was the German Ralph Weltzhoffer, who in 2002 created an image of the football player David Beckham from the text of his biography posted on Wikipedia.
The main idea that prompted Ralph to create a text portrait is a large amount of personal information about a particular person on the Internet and its availability. In our life, it has become the norm to search for information about acquaintances on the Internet or enter the name of a new business partner into Google, in the hope of finding something interesting. At the same time, no one knows for certain where in the ever-growing sea of information is the truth, and where is the lie. In this situation, Ralph decided to check whether his own statement that "there is no such area where art cannot be presented" applies to the global network? Text portraits in this regard prove the author's complete correctness.
Ralph Weltshoffer was born in 1966 in Mannheim (Germany) and has been working as a photographer since 1984. Concentrating on human images, the author's color and black-and-white photographs provide a new perspective on the biographies and histories of well-known personalities.
