In that short moment, when the unlucky lottery ticket numbers have not yet been opened, this little piece of paper serves as the embodiment of all human desires: luxurious houses, expensive cars, exotic vacations … And then everything collapses. Dreams crash against reality, and a losing ticket flies into the trash can. And if for most people the next story with a lottery ticket ends there, then for the creative duo Ghost of a Dream this is just the beginning: from unlucky pieces of paper, the authors create those dreams that were never destined to come true.
Ghost of a Dream is sculptor Lauren Was and artist Adam Eckstrom. In 2007, the couple were walking their dog when they suddenly saw a pile of discarded lottery tickets. For artists, these small pieces of paper seemed like a symbol of human desires that did not come true. It was on this day that the idea arose to create something interesting out of losing tickets.
“We started collecting tickets thinking about what the people who play the lottery dream about. According to the results of our research, it turned out that most people want to buy a car if they win. That is why the first product that Lauren and Adam created was the Hummer H3 model car. The next two desires - home and vacation - are also embodied in ticket sculptures. A car, home and vacation make up the Dream trilogy.
The authors always announce the total amount spent by people on the purchase of tickets, from which they then created this or that project. For example, the total "cost" of Hammer is $ 39,000, and the dream home is worth $ 70,000.
In addition to sculptures, Ghost of a Dream has also created a series of collages of lottery tickets and romance novel covers. These works symbolize the development of adrenaline and outbursts of passion that overwhelm us both during love experiences and during gambling.
