In Philadelphia, everything breathes freedom: not only the bell of the same name is located here. In 2000, sculptor Zenos Frudakis celebrated freedom by showing bronze men trying to break away from a building wall. In fact, urban sculpture depicts one person who stands out and separates step by step from the gray mass of faces, arms and legs.
AP Chekhov squeezed out of himself a slave drop by drop. The character of Zenos Frudakis tears himself apart piece by piece from the wall, in which he is just a brick (or, rather, another, more amorphous, building material). The composition develops from left to right, starting with a mummy embedded in the wall. The work contains references to other works. Thus, the author admits that the second figure from the left was created under the influence of Michelangelo's "Risen Slave".
Really got out of the wall, which the sculptor calls the grave, only the last character, free as a bird (estimate the wingspan), beautiful and immortal, believes Zenos Frudakis. And the place from which the bronze hero pulled himself out contains the inscription "Stop here." So everyone can feel like a part of modern sculpture.
The sculptor says that he wanted to create a work for the general public so that any passer-by would immediately understand what it was about - about the struggle for freedom, difficult and painful, but bringing true happiness.
But there is another important meaning here. Zenos Frudakis notes that his urban sculpture reflects the process of its creation: from an undefined concept and raw material to a completed work. The author becomes immortal, like his hero, thanks to art.
The sculptor embedded his own face and hands, cast in bronze into the wall, the faces of his father and mother, and even the face of a cat that had lived with him for 20 years. The coins, which can be seen, coming closer to the urban sculpture, not only demonstrate the relationship between art and money, but also encrypt the author's date of birth - 07.07.51: 7 - penny and 2 pennies, 51 - 2 quarters and pennies.
