Gerhard Richter's art is to paint over photographs with color. The result is abstract, expressive and somewhat reminiscent of the work of the Impressionist era.

Gerhard Richter turned to the technique of drawing on photographs by accident: using the cropping of photographs and newspapers when writing oil paintings, he often dripped paint on the photograph. The resulting result and the contact in one work of such different areas of art as painting and photography, inspired the artist to intensively experiment with this unusual combination. The series of works received a simple title that fully reflects its content - "Overpainted Photographs", that is, "drawings over photographs".

The artist's works combine manual labor and mechanical reproduction, creating a new art form, conceptually richer than Richter's conventional paintings. Combining drawing and photography allows you to neutralize the expressive forces of each of them and reach the "golden mean" of their capabilities.

The subjects of photographs coexist in a specific way with the drawing applied to them: sometimes they interact with each other, sometimes the paint overlaps the original image or even threatens to surpass it.

The artist has been combining painting with photography for over 20 years. In 2001, his work in this area was presented at an exhibition of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A book was also published, which is a photo album with a collection of works by Gerhard Richter.
