New York-based artist Debra Hampton creates gorgeous collages of supermodels cut from glossy magazines, watercolors and ink, resulting in women who look more like exotic aliens than terrestrial creatures.
“These are images of cultural disorder, presented in the form of violent masks. If monsters and virgins are traditional opposites in a male imaginary reality, then here we can assume that they coexist and can be in the same body,”one of the New York publications says about Debra Hampton's work.
Debra's striking collages are based on color photographs, in particular magazine clippings. Each piece cut out - and there are thousands of them! - Hampton finds its place by designating it deliberately or by choosing at random. Then ink and paint go to work, complementing the process of connecting patterns of chaos, randomness and order together.
A closer look at Debra Hampton's collages reveals the paradoxical elements that make up her work - carved symbols of beauty are complemented by ornaments in the form of weapons. These extraordinary figures initially seduce and tempt the viewer, but only in order to later reveal their devilish essence.
Debra Hampton's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and has also been featured in such publications as ArtReview, the New York Times, Queens Chronicle, Etapes Graphiques, and The New York Art World.
