Somewhere in their temporal and spatial dimensions there are "Singing Birds". Part children, part animals, they exist in a strange world between fiction and reality, sadness and joy. Songbirds is a series of paintings by the American artist S. J. Hart, which are currently on a solo show at a New Orleans gallery.
The scenes depicted in the paintings of S. J. Hart, resemble pictures from children's books, but unlike book illustrations, the canvases of the American artist are saturated with sadness, mysterious motives are felt in them. Old-fashioned children, animals from the fairy forest are present in almost every picture, they are the central characters. Children, participants and heroes of surreal stories, are the focal point of an emotional and mysterious story that unfolds among the lush and rich flora and fauna.
S. J. Hart attended the Harvard School of the Arts and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She currently has a studio in Illinois where she creates. The American artist paints pictures, creates prints, as well as illustrations for books. Her work combines traditional elements of engraving, painting with a touch of Gothic, abstraction and decorative elements.
Since 2000 S. J. Hart are on display at universities, art galleries and museums in Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, New Orleans, Portland, New York. Her works are also presented in private collections in the USA and Europe. In her free time, the artist, in addition to painting, is engaged in the restoration of old, historical and rare books.
