The Ghost of Shanghai is the title of a new album book by Canadian photographer Greg Girard, which is a vivid photographic evidence of the disappearance of historical architecture. All photographs are saturated with perceptible melancholy, a sense of fading beauty and sadness.
Greg Girard has lived in Shanghai for the past ten years, photographing its old quarters, historic buildings and simply abandoned houses. There are no people in all the paintings of the Canadian photographer, but they all radiate the energy of the inhabitants of the metropolis. Life pulsates in the “empty” pictures, they are dynamic, and not at all static, the urban rhythm of life is felt in them.
Greg Girard was born in Canada in 1955 and raised in Vancouver. He began his career as a photographer in 1986 shooting for Asiaweek, covering events in Hong Kong. Greg Girard is a photographer who captures the changes taking place in China and throughout Asia on camera, collaborating over the years with publications such as Time, Newsweek, Fortune, Forbes, Elle, New York Times Magazine, clients. Greg Girard's work is on display in galleries around the world, including South Korea, London, Germany, Helsinki and New York.
