January marked the tenth anniversary of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Its appearance in 2001 marked a turning point in the history of the World Wide Web, one of the first manifestations of the Internet 2.0. It is precisely the decade of Wikipedia, as well as the role of ordinary people in its existence, and is dedicated installation of Wikipedia's 10th Anniversary.
Over the ten years of its existence, Wikipedia has become one of the most important sources of information in the world. It is to her that the overwhelming majority of Internet users turn to, wanting to find out something, clarify information, etc. But, despite the huge amount of information collected there, there is not everything on Wikipedia.
But this is fixable. For ten years, this online encyclopedia has appeared millions of articles in hundreds of language sections. And it's scary to imagine how many of them will appear in another ten years. After all, any user can create any article on this site. The main thing is that it meets the criteria of significance defined by Wikipedia policy.
But in the Wikipedia's 10th Anniversary installation, created by artists Dean McNamee and Tim Burrell-Saward and installed at the Louise T Blouin Foundation's West London office, no criteria of significance are important. Here, on a special frame, sixteen printers are suspended, which print the first paragraphs of Wikipedia articles on small paper sheets at regular intervals. It turns out to rain from the articles of this electronic encyclopedia.
Moreover, any visitor here on the spot can create an article about anything with the help of special templates: about himself, about his cat, the little toe of his foot, a park bench and the like. This article will be printed immediately. It remains only to find it among the mass of leaves lying on the floor.
This opportunity, available to all people who came to see the Wikipedia’s 10th Anniversary installation, perfectly illustrates the main principle of Wikipedia and its main strength - the role of an ordinary person in creating the largest universal information base in the world.
