The picture of Konstantin Khabensky, dubbed "Sobibor", was nominated by the Russian Federation for the 2019 Oscar. It was this film, which tells about the successful uprising in the Nazi camp, that was chosen by the majority of votes. The number of applicants also included the films "Summer" and "Dovlatov", but they chose "Sobibor", considering that this film has the most chances to win a prestigious award in the film industry.
Timur Aliyev, a famous film critic, said that the theme of the chosen film is quite worthy of an Oscar. Such films are often present at the ceremony. As an example, he named such films as "The Lives of Others", "Ida" and "Son of Saul", which were nominated for an "Oscar" and named the best films in a foreign language in 2007, 2015 and 2016, respectively.
The film critic noticed that debut films are rarely nominated for an Oscar, more often they prefer the works of directors with extensive experience. But the motion picture "Sobibor" is a quality work that can significantly improve the image of Russia.
The film was directed by Konstantin Khabensky, a famous Russian actor who also played the main role in the film. Sobibor is a film based on real events. He tells about the uprising in a concentration camp, organized by Alexander Pechersky, a Soviet officer, which turned out to be the only successful one during the Second World War.
Filmmakers and actors from Germany, Russia, Poland, France and Lithuania took part in the filming of the film. They decided to shoot it in five languages at once - German, Russian, Polish, Yiddish and Dutch. The producers of "Sobibor" were Maria Zhuromskaya, Gleb Fetisov, Elmira Aynulova. Mikhalina Olshanskaya, Christopher Lambert, Gela Meskhi, Maria Kozhevnikova, Felice Yankell and others took part in the filming.
The premiere of the film "Sobibor" was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the uprising of prisoners in a Polish concentration camp. The first show on the territory of Russia took place in Rostov-on-Don - the hometown of Alexander Pechersky and it was on April 24, 2018. The world premiere took place in Warsaw a day earlier - on April 23. Sobibor was released on May 3.
