Although the birthplace of Filip Dujardin is Ghent - an old Belgian city with canals and picturesque houses - the author himself is attracted by a completely different type of architecture. Philip photographs typical and often depressing modern buildings, and then, using computer processing, transforms them into strange buildings that are unlikely to ever exist.
Some of Dujardin's photographs show lonely and gloomy places, reminiscent of old abandoned factories. However, the true purpose of these buildings is probably known only to their author. Other photographs show the so-called "impossible" residential buildings: Philip assembles them piece by piece, like Lego or Tetris bricks. And although the existence of such structures in real life is hardly possible, in the author's images they look surprisingly real.
According to Philip Dujardin, at first he had the idea of another fantastic building. Then the author creates a model: before it was cardboard samples, but recently he has mastered SketchUp (a three-dimensional modeling program) and is working with it. After that, Philip picks up a camera and goes on a photo shoot. In search of a suitable material, the author does not have to travel far: most of the photographs were taken in his own native Ghent, not far from Dujardin's house. With the necessary shots, the photographer returns to his studio, where he cuts, pastes, resizes parts of the images and assembles one original building from them.
Philip Dujardin was born in Ghent in 1971. It is unlikely that anyone will be surprised by the fact that he is an architect by education. As the author notes in an interview, his work is based on a certain dissatisfaction: buildings that he cannot build, being an architect, Philip creates with the help of his photo collages.
