Vincent Hall & Friends is the title of an exhibition of sculptures by the artist Vincent Hall at the Marlow Art Center, USA. It is difficult to say who these friends are in a particular case, one can only assume that these are thirty-seven masks created by the artist from recycled plastic milk bottles. The masks of Ray Charles, Oprah Winfrey, Tina Turner and Barack Obama are on display at the gallery from July 12 to August 7, 2009.
The artist “sculpted” masks of ordinary people, animals, celebrities and even talismans from ordinary plastic bottles, which most people throw away after finishing their last glass of milk. Spectators who come to see the sculptural works of Vincent Hall are very surprised to learn from what material his masks are created. Very often they mistake heated, molten plastic, which has taken on the shape of human faces, for wood or clay. It is worth noting that not all face masks are exact copies of real people. For example, in the collection of Vincent Hall there is a mask-caricature of the President of America Barack Obama.
Vincent Hall, now 41, started art two decades ago, but he had to quit because it wasn’t profitable. I had to make money and I had to forget about art. But a couple of years ago, he decided to revive his former passion for art, took a part-time job, and now spends most of his free time in his studio, working with plastic bottles and creating original masks.
For the author himself, his sculptures are more than objects hanging on the wall. They are like living people, with emotions, thoughts and dreams.
