Los Angeles-based artist Leo Eguiarte uses mixed media to create witty, acidic paintings that address humanity's ever-increasing fixation on material values and offer an alternative perspective on contemporary reality.
Painted right on top of old printed circuit boards, Egiarte's latest work in the Synthetic Dream collection is vibrant with imagery and an extraterrestrial focus. Commenting on his work, Leo states: "The Synthetic Dream series addresses the problem of power that is usurped by a select minority."
This approach to the choice of problems clarifies the meaning of many of the artist's works. For example, in the painting "Misfortune" ("misfortune", "failure") the author expresses his idea through the image of the world enclosed in a sphere resembling a crystal ball - a child's toy in the hands of a sinister puppeteer in a black hood.
In other works by the artist, post-apocalyptic landscapes evoke dystopian worlds from classic novels and science fiction films, hinting at an unsightly future that humanity may have to face.
Leo's signature colors, lilac, turquoise and emerald, are invariably present in all paintings in the series, giving it an easily recognizable "acid" character, especially in combination with the geometric shapes and specific texture of printed circuit boards, which the artist uses as a basis for his paintings.
“I feel that my task as an artist is to leave documentary evidence of modern realities and to generate a critical reaction aimed at pressing issues that threaten the existence of humanity and our ecosystem,” says Leo Egiarte.
With more than twenty paintings that make up the Synthetic Dream art project, Leo hopes to provide the viewer with an opportunity to reflect on the joint decisions that we make as one human race and on alternative ways of interacting with the world around us.
Working in a fundamentally different genre, sculptor Greg Brotherton shares Eguiarte's pessimistic attitude towards the future. His sculptures from various industrial junk show the world of emptiness, oppression and slavery.
