An invaluable historical discovery was made on the island of Crete after prolonged downpours. A marble statue of an aristocrat of Ancient Rome was removed to the surface of the 21st century. This find was spotted by a farmer in the riverbed. About which he immediately hastily notified the archaeological service of the city of Ierapetra.

According to the first evaluative views of the ancient sculpture, archaeologists found that it is an image of a Roman woman who belonged to the aristocratic class of Ancient Rome and lived in the 3rd century AD. The antique statue is very beautiful and apparently was an adornment of a mansion or a Roman grave.

The head of the female statue is beautifully executed, has a graceful hairstyle and is well preserved, so that its approximate age could be determined. It is also noted that such items have never been found in the city of Ierapetra before.

Further study of the statue will take place in the Agios Nikolaos laboratory, where it will be cleaned and restored. After a detailed study, the statue will be placed in the exposition of the Archaeological Collection of Ierapetra. Archaeologists hope that studying the marble wonder will allow them to shed more light on its history.

The Ierapetra Museum still consists of two modest premises. Various antiquities that were previously in this city were stolen at one time and sold on the black market. But the city's municipality does not despair and is looking for a place to build a large, modern and, most importantly, safe museum, in order to display all the ancient treasures of its city and thereby increase the flow of tourists.
