One of the most successful and talented actors of Soviet cinema of the 1950s-1960s Nikolay Rybnikov so quickly and easily won the popularity and love of millions of viewers that many envied him: by the age of 30, he managed to play the main roles in cult films "Spring on Zarechnaya Street", "Height", "Girls" … Why did the people's favorite disappear from the screens so unexpectedly?
Later, reflecting on his fate in the cinema, Nikolai Rybnikov said: “It just so happened that in the screen life I always had to be a foreman. In "Vysot" - high-altitude installers, in "Alien Relatives" - a tractor brigade, in "Spring on Zarechnaya Street" - steel workers, and in "Girls" - lumberjacks … ". The actor coped with the tasks set by the directors brilliantly, but therefore he found himself hostage to his own role: since then his name has been associated exclusively with the image of a hard worker from the people.
For the generation of the 1950s and 1960s. he became a real "hero of our time". Rybnikov was so convincing in the image of the foreman and so similar to thousands of the same guys working in factories and factories throughout the country that not only the audience believed him - the directors also now no longer represented him in other images and did not give the opportunity to reveal other sides of talent …
Few people know that in 1965 another important episode happened in Rybnikov's film life - the role of Denisov in "War and Peace" by S. Bondarchuk. The transformation was so striking that many did not even recognize the famous actor in this new image.
Two years later, he played three roles at once in the film "Wake Mukhin" - Benckendorff, the ancient Roman Titus Valery and the medieval inquisitor. Critics smashed the picture to smithereens. His works of the late 1960s also went unnoticed by the public.
In the meantime, intellectuals-engineers have replaced the workers in the cinema. Rybnikov got older, the roles of reckless guys no longer suited him. He never begged for roles, did not persuade the directors and did not insist on anything. And he was offered only cameo roles. Surprisingly, the creative fate of his wife, actress Alla Larionova, was the same.
Actress Irina Skobtseva called him “an actor of untapped opportunities,” and this was indeed the case. Although it is still impossible to call him an unclaimed and unsuccessful actor. The roles that he played, forever entered the history of Soviet cinema and became its best pages. And his name is rightly included in 20 most beautiful actors of Soviet cinema
