The small Italian village of Viganello is a unique place in its own way. About 200 people live here, and each of them knows that the most important thing in life is sunlight. The settlement is located in a valley surrounded on all sides by alpine mountains, therefore, from mid-November to early February, the locals live in darkness in the literal sense of the word. The real salvation was the construction of a giant mirror that reflects the sun's rays!

For several centuries, the inhabitants of Viganello have celebrated the "return" of the sun on February 2 every year. However, that all changed in 2006 when the resourceful architect Giacomo Bonzani designed a giant structure that reflects sunlight on the town square all year round! From now on, during the winter months, the village is simply bathed in light and warmth.

The huge mirror is installed approximately 870 meters above the village, its area is 40 square meters. The mirror is equipped with computer software that allows you to monitor the position of the sun and adjust the inclination of the mirror panel accordingly. Turning the mirror in the desired direction ensures that the sun's rays are constantly reflected downward, illuminating the village.

Today the village of Viganello has become a real tourist attraction. Giacomo Bonzani admits that they did not immediately believe in his idea to fill the village with sunlight. However, when his like-minded engineer Emilio Barlocco made the necessary calculations, the mayor of Pierfranco Midali did his best to find sponsors. The cost of the project turned out to be rather big, it amounted to about 100,000 euros.

By the way, this is not the first attempt to create an alternative star. In London, there was already an artificial sun shining on Trafalgar Square!
