Siachen glacier in the Eastern Karakorum it is truly enormous, its length is 78 km. It is famous not only for being one of the five largest glaciers in the area, but also for being the second largest glacier in the world, located in non-polar regions. In addition, it is one of the most dangerous areas in the East Karakorum as fierce fighting between India and Pakistan is taking place on this territory. The opposition has continued since 1984, which is why Siachen is often referred to as the highest battleground on earth (the glacier is located at 18,000 feet above sea level).
The conflict in Siachen arose due to the inaccurate territorial division on the map of this region. After the Indo-Pakistani war in 1971, a peace agreement was signed between the two states, but there was no question of a "controversial issue" in it. UN officials could not have imagined that the cold and barren region would become a pretext for territorial claims between countries, but in the early 1970s, the Pakistani government began sending expeditions to the summit of Siachen under the pretext of climbing the highest peaks of the glacier.
In 1984, Pakistan made an attempt to deploy army formations on Siachen, but India responded with a military operation. In subsequent years, "outbreaks" occurred more than once. Thousands of soldiers are sent to the region every year, most of them die from unfavorable weather conditions (frostbite, avalanches, etc.), and not from enemy bullets. The armistice agreement entered into force in 2003, by which time both the sides lost approximately 2,000 people. India and Pakistan are stationing formations on Siachen, which number 3,000 troops on each side. India officially spends about $ 300 million on the maintenance of outposts, and Pakisan - $ 200 million.
India also set two "military" records on the glacier: it built the world's tallest helipad (6400 m above sea level), as well as the world's tallest telephone booth.
