Scottish sculptor Andy Goldsworthy (Andy Goldsworthy) works in the field of land artexperimenting with an infinite variety of natural materials. The author takes completely ordinary materials - leaves, sticks, flowers, stones, branches - and remakes them without radically changing, but only forcing us to pay attention to them.
Andy Goldsworthy does not work alone: his co-author is nature itself. After all, the sculptor does not create, for example, leaves, icicles or stones - he takes them ready-made. The author only transforms these materials into forms that we have never seen before, forms so fragile, simple and natural that we really want to study them and understand why these ordinary objects look so new, so bright and so beautiful.
“I believe it takes incredible courage to work with flowers, leaves and petals,” says Andy Goldsworthy. The author makes most of his temporary and permanent sculptures with his bare hands, and only to create a few works from stones did he have to resort to the help of machines. Speaking of stones: Andy Goldsworthy is considered the founder of the art of balancing stones.
As is often the case in land art, Andy Goldsworthy has to be not only a sculptor, but also a photographer, because photography is often the only way to show his works to other people over time. “Each work grows, changes, collapses - these are integral parts of the cycle, which the photographer must capture at the moment of the highest flowering,” the author notes.
Andy Goldsworthy was born in 1956 in Cheshire. He currently lives and works in Scotland, is a professor at Cornell University (USA). In addition, Goldsworthy is the owner of various awards, among which the most significant is the title of Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (2000).
