Medieval castles - fascinating monuments of fabulous antiquity; even in ruins, overgrown with ivy and strewn with the dust of oblivion, they make an indelible impression on romantic hearts. But, despite attempts to preserve them, medieval castles are being destroyed more and more … Will they soon be gone? It was not so! The most ambitious project in the world for lovers of the Middle Ages - an attempt to build from scratch 13th century castle - already halfway to success.
The father of this project is Michel Guyot. In 1979, this passionate history buff bought the Saint-Fargo castle with his brother Jacques. The building was in a terrible state, but years of labor helped the brothers restore the castle and make it a tourist attraction. Over time, Michel more and more often came up with the idea: how nice it would be to build new medieval castleto understand how it was done in those days! This is how the project was born Guédelon.
Construction of an unusual facility in the French province of Treigny began in 1997 year, but even before that, the Guédelon castle was created on paper and in a three-dimensional model. The architect Jacques Moulin designed it according to the canons of the XII-XIII centuries: this is the time of the late heyday of rounded and harmonious Romanesque castles, which have not yet given way to the Gothic ones.
At this construction site, you will not see concrete mixers, cars or cranes. The uniqueness of the project lies in the fact that the builders work exactly according to the technologies of the XIII century! Skillful hands of enthusiasts and hired builders smash stones with rough sledgehammers, hew wood with iron axes, prepare lime mortar and raise building materials by pulling a rope onto a drum. At the same time, the workers are even dressed in medieval uniforms.
It cannot be otherwise: although construction modern medieval castle will end only in the early 20s (approximately in 2022), it already attracts thousands of tourists. Actually, 300,000 visitors a year: this is the largest tourist attraction in the region. Traveling through the castle under construction, visitors see, and are amazed at the ingenuity of medieval craftsmen. Builders do not care either: Guédelon is not only fifty jobs, but also an opportunity for reenactors of the Middle Ages to gain invaluable knowledge and experience.
