Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has decided to sell the painting "Towers of the Koutoubia Mosque", painted by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. It is reported by Forbes.
It is clarified that the painting, which the artist acquired with her ex-husband Brad Pitt, will be put up for auction next month. It is considered the only work of a politician created during the Second World War. At one time, Churchill presented the painting to US President Franklin Roosevelt, then it was in the hands of several owners and eventually ended up with a star couple.
Together, Pitt and Jolie have amassed an entire art collection valued at approximately $ 25 million. The actress also has two Churchill-inspired tattoos.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got married in 2014. The couple have six children, three of them are adopted. Two years later, Jolie filed for divorce. The couple completed their divorce proceedings in April 2019.
Churchill became interested in painting when he was already over forty years old, but managed to create more than 500 canvases in his life. Most of these works are in private collections or belong to the descendants of the politician.
Recall that the painting Scene at Marrakech ("Scene in Marrakech"), created by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874-1965) and estimated at almost £ 500 thousand (over $ 677 thousand), is put up for an English Christie's auction. This was reported on Monday by the Daily Mail newspaper.
The painting (1935), donated by the author to British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery (1887-1976), is being auctioned for the first time. According to the head of the department of contemporary British art at the trading house Nick Orchard, "such a gift is a testament to the friendship and deep respect that the Prime Minister had for the military leader." "This work of art by a renowned political figure, an accomplished artist, is one of the best paintings he painted in the 1930s," added a spokesman for the auctioneers.
Winston Churchill first visited Morocco in 1935 and was impressed by the landscapes of the African country. Then he repeatedly visited there to refresh the memory of the military events and to devote time to painting. At one time, at the Sotheby's auction, his painting "View of the Moroccan city of Tinkherir" went under the hammer for £ 612.8 thousand ($ 1.24 million).
In November last year, the painting Jugs and Bottles ("Jugs and Bottles") was sold at the same auction for £ 983 thousand ($ 1.29 million). The preliminary estimate of the work ranged from £ 150 thousand to £ 250 thousand ($ 198 - 331 thousand). It features empty jugs and glasses on a silver tray, as well as open bottles of brandy and scotch with the label of Churchill's favorite Scotch whiskey, Johnnie Walker.
