The wedding did take place, on June 7, 1901, a closed ceremony took place. From that moment on, Knipper and Chekhov became officially husband and wife, although they never began to live together.

The distance could not but affect the lives of the spouses. Olga had admirers in Moscow, and therefore rumor brought unpleasant information to Chekhov about the betrayal of her beloved. However, he forgave everything and responded with his usual irony:
The last days of Chekhov's life were spent with Olga. She was there, taking care of her husband.
