His mother called his father "the horror of the world, the shame of nature." They met during the Civil War. At that time, Semyon Kardanovsky, a former homeless child, went through the First World War and managed to be captured by the Austrians, after which he took the pseudonym Anton Bykov. The soldier was often transferred from city to city, and his son Rolland was born in Kiev in 1929. He received his unusual name in honor of the French writer Romain Rolland - however, his mother mistakenly believed that Rolland was a name. And in the passport office he was recorded as Roland and incorrectly indicated his patronymic and date of birth.

In the late 1930s. the Bykov family returned to Moscow, where Roland began to study in a theater studio. When the Great Patriotic War began, his father went to the front, and the family went to evacuate to Yoshkar-Ola. There, Roland's grandmother was engaged in fortune-telling with cards, and due to this she fed her family. Once the boy himself decided to try his hand at this occupation and guessed to a neighbor that her husband would return from the front in 3 days. Imagine the surprise of all the acquaintances when this really happened! After that, the young fortuneteller had no end to his "clients", and everyone was satisfied with his work. Roland's royalties soon became the main source of family income.

In 1943 the family returned to Moscow. Meanwhile, fortune-telling sessions led to unexpected consequences: Roland believed so much in his abilities as a predictor of the future that on this basis he began to have frequent nervous breakdowns, and he had to seek professional help. For some time Bykov was treated at the Kashchenko psychiatric hospital. Who knows how his future fate would have developed if it had not been saved by a new hobby - amateur performance.

When he first appeared at an audition for an amateur group, he was asked what he can do and why he decided to come to them. The young man honestly replied that he could not do anything, and his only motive was free screenings in the cinema. But after he read the poem and began to bow down on the stage, like a grandmother in front of the icons - her forehead on the floor - the audience in the hall gave a thunderous ovation, and the members of the commission were disarmed. After that, all his acquaintances began to call him the Artist.

Despite his extraordinary abilities and artistry, after school Bykov could not enter GITIS and VGIK due to his small stature and poor diction, but he was not denied at the Shchukin school. And soon he proved that he could live up to expectations - only during his studies, the young man played about 50 roles. After graduating from college, he was accepted into the troupe of the Theater of the Young Spectator, and even then he realized how interesting it is to work for children: "". Perhaps it was thanks to this experience that Bykov subsequently coped so brilliantly with roles in children's films and, as a director, made films for children, which became classics of the genre.

Rolan Bykov came to cinema in the mid-1950s, and in the next decade they started talking about him as one of the brightest and most talented artists. But despite the rave reviews from directors and critics, the authorities did not favor the actor. When Mikhail Kozakov was about to approve him for the role of Pushkin, the Minister of Culture Yekaterina Furtseva was outraged: ""

Bykov was not allowed to write scripts and did not launch his films into production, he became addicted to alcohol, and his wife helped him overcome this addiction and again believe in himself. She has always been a reliable rear for him.

She was there at that terrible moment when Rolan Bykov was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in the lung and had an operation. For two years after that, Elena Sanaeva continued to fight for her husband's life, but, alas, for the first time she was powerless. On October 6, 1998, the famous actor and director, the favorite of young viewers, Rolan Bykov, passed away.
