Dust in living quarters or work areas is bad. Therefore, we all wipe the surfaces every few days to get rid of it. And here is the American artist Allison Cortson diligently collects this dust, and then creates with its help very impressive paintings!
Someone draws with watercolors, someone - oil paints, someone creates with a pencil, and someone - with a ballpoint pen. And Allison Cortson uses as materials for her artwork, mainly, the dust she collected in her apartment.
Every time she thinks about cleaning, she prepares a vacuum bag in which she carefully collects all the dust. This material later becomes part of the paintings of the American artist - she uses it instead of paints. It takes just as much dust to create one painting as Allison Cortson collects at home in a month.
True, in such paintings, dust is mainly used to draw the entourage, the background. But people and some other elements of Allison Cortson's work are painted using oil paints.
In order to prevent Allison Cortson's paintings from collapsing, so that dust does not fall from them, the artist covers the canvases with a layer of transparent hermetic acrylic before finishing the work - it “preserves” the image.
With her dusty paintings, Allison Cortson provides a very impressive example of how visual art can be created without the use of traditional materials. It is enough just to look around you.
In this she echoes many other contemporary artists. For example, Alessandro Ricci, who paints pictures with London smog, the international project Reverse Graffiti, including the master with the alias Moose, who creates graffiti, cleaning pieces of dirty walls on city streets. But they prefer to use dirt from the outside in their work, and Allison Cortson confines herself to her own, home-grown garbage.
