Archaeological values worth $ 2 million have been removed from the illegal trade and from the so-called black diggers. They became the property of the Russian Federation and were transferred to the Central Museum of Taurida, where they will now be kept in permanent storage. The act of transferring the collection was signed by Sergei Aksenov, the head of Crimea, and Leonid Mikhailyuk, head of the FSB department for Sevastopol and Crimea. This document was signed in Simferopol on December 21, 2018.
Mikhailyuk said that archaeological items, among which were mainly items from the times of the Roman Empire, were seized by officers of the Federal Security Service Administration for Crimea and Sevastopol during measures aimed at stopping the illegal circulation of items related to cultural values. Experts evaluated this collection and called it invaluable. Anyone who appreciates the history of the country should definitely visit the museum and get acquainted with cultural objects that could have been lost forever, but remained in the country thanks to the vigilance of the FSB.
Andrey Malgin, director of the museum, talked to reporters. He clarified that the collection has been exhibited at the museum since last year, but only now is it recognized as the property of the state, which decided that the WTC should become a place for its storage. There are only about 200 items in this collection, which belong to different periods, from the Bronze Age to late antiquity. Experts who took part in the assessment of these cultural values estimate that the total value of the collection is close to $ 2 million.
This collection includes a golden Bosporan hryvnia, bronze items, a collection of Roman glass, etc. Such items could complement the collections of the largest museums. The director of the Central Museum of Taurida believes that such a collection is a good compensation for losses. He means that part of the collection of the museum he heads is located in Amsterdam. The reason for this was the litigation with Ukraine.
The head of Crimea Aksenov thanked the employees of the federal security service for the work done. He noted that until 2014, a large number of black diggers operated on the territory of the peninsula, and it is thanks to the FSB that their number tends to zero today.
