Video: Migrants from African Countries to Europe: Portraits of Those Who Are Usually Overlooked
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
According to the official data of the International Organization for Migration, more than 4.6 million migrants from African countries live in Europe. However, it is not customary to talk about the influence of immigrants from the African continent on other countries. Few people think about this question, and in order to remedy this situation, photographer Dagmar van Wiigel created a series of colorful portraits called “Diaspora”.
The people who became the heroes of the photo cycle are not professional models. Their images are stylized to resemble the aesthetics of Orientalism, because the attraction to exoticism, interest in African culture were characteristic of the European art of the 18th century. The heroes of the modern photo cycle pose with dignity, their images are laconic, they seem to exist outside of time. Dagmar van Wiigel disputes the prejudice against African migrants, because in the West you can often find dismissive attitude towards them.
Dagmar is from the Netherlands. After receiving her education, she became seriously interested in the study of African culture, and even moved to Zimbabwe. In total, she lived in Africa for 14 years, moving from city to city. In addition to Zimbabwe, she lived in Tanzania, Botswana, Uganda. Now Dagmar is married, her husband is also a migrant in Europe, he stayed here for 9 years, and comes from Zimbabwe. “My heroes are not dressed in specific historical outfits. Their portraits may seem exotic, this is the main idea of the cycle - to show the “otherness” of these people,”says the author of the photo project.
Each portrait has its own story. Among the heroes are 18-year-old girl Penda from Guinea, who has been separated from her mother for 5 years, and 29-year-old Niño from Angola, who has been separated from his family for 10 years. Dagmar admits that each of the participants in the photo project looked at their own picture with interest. The photographer tried to convey their inner dignity, character, beauty, strength of character.
The author of the photo project is sure that thanks to such pictures, it is possible to awaken mutual understanding between people, because these portraits are a synthesis of the past and the present of immigrants from Africa. Dagmar hopes that her efforts will not be in vain, and finally there will be a public discussion of issues related to the influence of migrants on European history.
