One of the most unusual parks in New York - High Line … Until 1980, it was a functioning railway line, but after that it was decided to close this branch, and the last freight train passed the rails. For about twenty years, the rails were empty, until local enthusiastic architects Joshua David and Robert Hammond spoke at a public meeting with a proposal to give a second life to the railway track by equipping a recreation park here. The work continued for several months with charitable donations from caring Americans.
In 2009, the High Line became one of the most visited vacation spots in New York. About 4 million Americans visit it annually. The Manhattan architectural experiment was so successful that it was repeated in London, Chicago, Philadelphia and Rotterdam.
This branch line was opened in Manhattan in 1934. There were many factories and warehouses in this part of New York, so transporting goods in this way helped to unload traffic. However, by the 1950s, freight volumes had dropped dramatically, making the track essentially useless. By the end of the 1990s, there were rails overgrown with grass and bushes on the site of the once busy track, so New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani decided to dismantle the railroad.
