People are usually imprisoned as punishment for the crimes they have committed. New York-based Taiwanese-born artist Tehching Hsieh voluntarily spent a year in captivity, taking photographs of himself hourly. An exhibition dedicated to this project of his opened at the 2010 Biennale in the South Korean city of Gwangju.
The artist Tehjin Xie is known all over the world for his unusual annual performances. For example, one year he spent completely in the open air, the other - in his workshop, where he forbade himself to read, watch TV, listen to the radio and speak. In the third year, Xie did not create anything from the field of art, did not look at the work of others, and did not talk about art.
But in 1980-1981, he spent exactly one year indoors, growing his hair. This performance of Tehchin Se is the subject of an exhibition recently opened as part of the 2010 Biennale in the South Korean city of Gwangju.
From April 11, 1980 to April 11, 1981, Tehjin Xie spent in a confined space. At the same time, at the very beginning of the experiment, he cut his hair baldly. And during his voluntary imprisonment, he took a photograph of himself every hour.
At the exhibition opened in Gwangju, visitors can see 365 columns of 24 photos of Tehjin Xie. From these thousands and thousands of photographs, you can trace in great detail how the hair of this extraordinary artist grew during the year, how he himself changed.
In addition, additional materials are exhibited there. For example, the robe that the author was wearing this year, the device on which he annually marked his presence inside the room, the camera on which the pictures were taken.
It must be said that few creative people are ready to make such sacrifices for the sake of art, which Tekhchin Xie made.
