June 13 - day 125th anniversary of death bavarian king Ludwig II from the Wittelsbach dynasty. Unlike other rulers, this king preferred to invest not in weapons and wars, but … in miracles. That is why its main heritage is many castles, the most beautiful of which is rightfully called Neuschwanstein. The Bavarians did not forget their Ludwig, and the other day they honored him - a man rightfully called the "mad king", "moon king" and " fairy king".
Ludwig II was a very strange king, a worthy offspring of the "crazy Wittelsbachs". He did not like and did not know how to lead the country, did not delve into the insidious political intrigues of the 19th century, could not marry “correctly”, succumbed to the pressure of Bismarck and by the age of 25 “handed over” Bavaria into the hands of the emperor. Because his true passion was culture and art.
King Ludwig supported and sponsored Wagner: probably, some sensitive strings of his soul were touched by the epic music of the great composer - the king plunged into dreams of the gold of the Rhine, marvelous forests, mountains of Bavaria and beautiful castles. Ludwig's entire youth spent taking care of the castles: a few years after the coronation, he began to build the legendary castle known to the whole world. Neuschwanstein ("new swan cliff"). It was in it that the king met his death - already getting old, completely retiring from business and losing any contract with his native country, which recognized him as a madman and a wasteful: still, spend so much gold on some stupid palaces (except for Neuschwanstein, there were three more: Schahen, Herrenchiemsee, Linderhof).
But the descendants understood the wisdom of the half-mad Ludwig II: gold spent a century and a half ago no longer warms anyone's soul, and Neuschwanstein Castle remains a true pearl of Germany, and attracts tourists like the Ring of the Nibelungen. In this castle, hundreds of Bavarians gathered to celebrate anniversary of the death of the king solemn mass. Even 125 years later, it is not clear what Ludwig II died of: it is only known that he and his doctor drowned in the same boat (it is believed that the doctor tried to prevent his suicide).
In memory of His Majesty, a cross was erected right in the lake. King Ludwig "spent his life between the ideal world and the real world," a local pastor said about him. It is true: the fairytale king remains a mystery to his contemporaries, even in 125th anniversary of his death.

Exotic motifs, a table in the hatch and other oddities of the castle of the Bavarian king Ludwig
The Bavarian king Ludwig is famous for fairytale castles, which he built for the love of art. However, only Linderhof he saw complete. "Fairy King": how Ludwig II of Bavaria was declared insane for his hobbies
Ludwig II of Bavaria was called the "fairy king" for his unusual behavior, not inherent in monarchs. Ludwig II grew up on Andersen's fairy tales, from the age of 16 he became interested in opera, and after accession to the throne he fanatically began to build castles, comparing himself to the hero of medieval epics. It got to the point that the king was declared insane, but descendants will remember him as the creator of one of the incredibly beautiful wonders of architecture - Neuschwanstein Castle
