At first glance, these wooden sculptures resemble totems carved by the masters of the wild tribes of the Amazon - bright, original, exotic. In fact, they are created by a resident of Chicago, Michael Ferris Jr., in order to convey to the viewer one simple truth: despite the outward resemblance of all people, the inner world of each of us is unique, rich and unique.
Michael Ferris creates his carved wood sculptures, and since 1993 he has worked exclusively with recycled wood. The author believes that this is a very important moment in his work: "I feel that I am doing the right thing." Each sculpture is based on a portrait of a specific person, and Michael tries, on the one hand, to convey the resemblance to the original as accurately as possible, and on the other, to depict the unique inner world of each hero. To this end, he combines classical sculptural forms with intricate carved surfaces, and then adds bright colors.
It usually takes about two months to create one sculpture, provided that the author is not distracted by any other projects. First, Michael carves the desired shape from the wood, then applies inlay and pigment solution. The most important thing for the author is to find a balance between the shape and surface of the sculpture, as well as the personality of the person who became its prototype.
“My father is Lebanese,” says Michael Ferris of his main source of inspiration. “In the 1960s, from a trip to the Middle East, he brought back two very beautiful inlaid backgammon tables made in Damascus. These tables were in my house, I looked at them quite often and always admired them. So when I started working with sculpture in 1992, the idea of using inlaid wood seemed very natural to me. Although at first I did not even associate the creation of inlaid sculptures with childhood impressions, after a while I realized that everything came from there."
