The era of silent cinema gave the world vivid images and big names. One of the most successful actresses of the early 20th century was Paula Negri … Shocking and charming, she drove men crazy and conquered Hollywood. She was credited with an affair with Charlie Chaplin, among her lovers was the sex symbol Rudolfo Valentino, and Hitler gave permission to shoot in Germany.
Paula Negri's path to silent cinema was not easy. Barbara Apolonia Chalupets (the real name of the actress) was born into a poor family, lost her father early and knew that there was simply no one to expect patronage in the art world. At first, she dreamed of a career as a ballerina, but could not complete her dance training due to tuberculosis. In the hope of getting a creative profession, she graduated from drama school. The acquired skills were useful to her during the filming of the first films.
Paula made her film debut in 1914, the film was called "Slave of Passions, Slave of Vice." Having played the role of a charming beauty, she quickly achieved popularity. From that moment, her triumphant march in the world of cinema began. One of the most successful films of the following years was Madame Dubarry.
A successful career as an actress was accompanied by an affair with director Ernst Lubitsch. It was there that in 1923 she went to storm the Dream Factory. Having signed a contract with Paramount, Paula starred in several films, without changing the role of a charming seductress. It was during this period that an affair with Rudolfo Valentino broke out, despite the fact that both Paula and Rudolfo were married. However, the actor soon died suddenly due to an unsuccessful operation. Paula was inconsolable.
Interestingly, both of Paula's official marriages did not bring her happiness. The first husband, Count Yevgeny Dombsky, "gave" his name to her, the second - Prince Sergei Mdivani - took her fortune.
Paula's career began to decline when dubbed films began to appear in the cinema. The actress had a too noticeable accent, and American audiences were not happy about it. The number of invitations to the shooting became less and less, and the roles turned out to be less and less significant. Paula was forced to return to Germany, here Hitler favored her films (Goebbels considered her appearance on the screen unacceptable, since it was easy to find a Jewish line in Paula's family).
Paul spent the last years of her life alone, few people remembered her. The actress passed away at the age of 90 and became the first star of Russian silent cinema Vera Cold, which in just 26 years has managed to become famous throughout the country!
