Stonehenge is one of the most mysterious places on our planet. For many centuries, historians and researchers have been trying to unravel the mystery of the creation of this grandiose ancient structure. There are several dozen versions of the origin of this historical monument. Recent archaeological research in the area may shed light on who built Stonehenge.
In the south of old England, 130 kilometers from London, in the county of Salisbury, there is an ancient megalith, steeped in a mass of legends and mysteries of Stonehenge. This is a complex of 30 huge, roughly hewn boulders, stacked on top of each other. This complex is built in the form of concentric circles.
Stonehenge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year this place in Salisbury is visited by about a million tourists from all over the world. It's a pity that few manage to wander between the stones - this is forbidden. The place is fenced. Tourists are allowed to enter the center of the circle only early at dawn or late in the evening. Since it is very difficult to get there on your own, and the main flow of tourists visits the attraction during the day, there are not very many lucky ones. Scientists have not put forward many versions of how and by whom Stonehenge was built! Druids, ancient Romans, Atlanteans with Hyperboreans, and the magician Merlin, and even aliens appear here! Until recently, a lot of videos about Stonehenge being a fake were circulating on the network.
As proof, they cited photographs of the mighty slabs of this structure, from which pieces broke off and concrete began to be seen. The truth is that from 1901 to 1965, the British government carried out a massive reconstruction of Stonehenge. This reconstruction has been criticized by scientists and archaeologists to smithereens. Since the historical monument was simply actually rebuilt. And, roughly speaking, Stonehenge is not the same.
There are several of the most common and plausible versions of the origin of Stonehenge. The first is that it was built by the Celts as a Druidic temple where the ancient priests performed their pagan rituals. But this version is refuted by some researchers, referring to the fact that the first evidence of Celtic culture dates back to the 9th century BC. Archaeological and geological research suggests that the last stage of the construction of the megalithic complex falls on the 11th century BC.
The second version is the theory that Stonehenge is not a lonely structure, but part of a grandiose ritual complex located within a radius of as much as 12 kilometers. Human burials were discovered there, and astronomers have put forward two versions: an ancient observatory and a cross-sectional model of our solar system. There is a version that the magnificent structure of the Stone Age was erected by the ancient Britons. They inhabited the British Isles during the Neolithic. Today, most researchers and scientists are inclined to this version.
During the latest archaeological excavations in the vicinity of Stonehenge, archaeologists have discovered stone working tools and various other utensils. Historians have recovered over 70,000 items. This may indicate that the very first British city was located on this site. Experts gave it a name - the cradle of Stonehenge.
Dr. Albert Lin filmed a documentary about the excavation. It was featured last weekend on the National Geographic Channel. There, Lin talks about how important this area was for people of the past and puts forward a version that Stonehenge itself is older than it was previously thought.
In the immediate vicinity of Stonehenge, structures were discovered, which are about five deep pits. Three of which, presumably, were occupied by large totem poles made of pine wood. Experts claim that they were established during the Mesolithic period, between the 9th and 7th centuries BC.
The construction of Stonehenge was a huge undertaking, about the same as the construction of the Egyptian pyramids. The builders of Stonehenge, according to historians, took about 1,500 years to build it. The huge monolithic stones were most likely transported to the site using a sled.
The fact that this is part of an ancient settlement is evidenced by the discovered burial grounds of the remains of the bones of large, already extinct, animal species. Scientists suggest that this indicates a large enough city for that time. A river flowed through this section, which provided good supplies of water. All this, together with a large number of animals as a source of meat, allowed hunter-gatherers to settle in these places. We hope that these discoveries brought humanity as close as possible to unraveling the mystery of the origin of Stonehenge. Whether it is true or not, the most important expert will show - time.
