American sculptor Jud Turner usually begins to talk about his work with the phrase: "Quantum physics convinces us that apparently whole objects consist of many empty spaces …" For someone, perhaps this statement alone will cause panic leave the site. But Turner's sculptures weren't created to create panic. They combine together parts of the past and the future, they reveal the whole as the interconnection of individual elements. After all, one wants to study them in order to understand how far apart nature and technology are - and how inseparable they are.
Using steel parts and scrap materials, Turner creates sculptures that unite opposites - the tension between humanity and nature, the dangers of balancing biology and technology, a combination of ancient fossils and modern mechanisms. "Between the seeming opposites, there are much greater correspondences," says Jude Turner, guided by this philosophy when creating his sculptures.
There is no denying the hidden subtext of the sculptor's works, which consists in depicting an unshakable faith in the cyclical nature of time. “Our most advanced computers are in no way comparable to the brains of the smallest living thing,” Jude keeps repeating.
Jude is trying to find in his works the optimal balance of realism and stylization, which allows him to convey the main idea of creativity to the deep levels of the audience's perception. "While my gaze can be drawn to the worst aspects of human nature, my sculptures have a sense of humor, which makes complex things much easier to perceive."
Jude Turner lives and works in Eugene, the second largest city in Oregon (USA). He has been working with steel and scrap materials for the past 16 years, and before that he was involved in painting and drawing. As the master himself declares, only in creativity does he gain real freedom.
