Biography and work of the artist

Roman Donskoy is a famous Russian artist, restorer and icon painter. Born in the city of Pushkin, in a family of icon painters. He took the first steps in his future profession under the guidance of his father, during his school period he attended the art circle of V. I. Andrushkevich.

He received the profession of a stone carver at the Ambramtsevo art-industrial school. In 1985, together with his father and brother, he worked in a team engaged in the restoration of monumental painting in Moscow churches. Roman was extremely fascinated by this area of activity. After graduating from the Moscow Institute of Art and Industry, he took part in the restoration of Orthodox churches in different parts of Russia.

Being engaged in the restoration and painting of Orthodox churches, Roman Donskoy never ceased to devote time to painting. During his studies at the institute, he took place as a professional painter and graphic artist. He always found particular inspiration in the nature of the Moscow region. In a later period, when the artist began to travel the world, landscapes of remote regions appeared on his canvases. Among them, the most striking are those dedicated to China and India.

An important place in the work of Donskoy was occupied by a portrait and multi-figured compositions. In such paintings, the artist best of all showed his individual professional features - rich imagination, high aestheticism, clarity of lines and shapes. Roman Genrikhovich's canvases can hardly be attributed to any specific artistic style. His works contain features of surrealism, impressionism and realism. In his diaries, Roman Genrikhovich Donskoy wrote that the French impressionist Henri Matisse had a noticeable influence on all his work. Colleagues of the artist noted that Van Gogh, Picasso, Chagall were also the inspiration.

Another source of inspiration for the artist was his family. In 1990, he married Olga Sokolova, three children were born in their marriage - daughters Anna and Ksenia, son Ivan. The images of the wife and children are guessed in many paintings.

Donskoy's paintings are recognizable, they differ in their original, own and well-recognized style. Looking at the artist's canvases, it is impossible to remain indifferent. I want to consider them, find new interpretations of images. The artist's common heritage includes almost 500 canvases. This year, on May 26, at the Omelchenko gallery, a small part of them will be shown for the first time in Russia.

The last years of his life Donskoy traveled a lot, studied Eastern philosophy. He died in Moscow at the age of 49.
