After spending most of his life in Detroit, photographer Kevin Bauman began to have a weakness and admiration for urban devastation, particularly in his hometown. After hearing stories about the former greatness of this glorious city from his parents, grandmothers and great-grandmothers, he began to ask himself the question of how the once such a beautiful city fell into decay so soon? His interest in photography pushed Kevin Bauman to imagine Detroit in his own way, telling his story.
A project to photograph abandoned houses started ten years ago. At first, it was just the author's interest of Kevin Bauman, who wanted to find out what state his Detroit is in. It was fascinating, sometimes stressful, causing the photographer to bewildered, who still found it difficult to understand how in such a short period of time the city found itself in such a dire situation.
With the increase in the number of photographs, Kevin Bauman developed his own style of photography. From black and white photography, the photographer switched to color, calling his series of works “100 abandoned houses”. 100 is quite a lot, but the number of abandoned and destroyed homes in Detroit actually exceeds 12,000. Detroit ranks first as the most destroyed city in the United States, with a population falling from 2 million inhabitants to 800,000. With such a dramatic decline, the problem with abandoned houses will not disappear soon.
