What is the coming year preparing for us? Where will the amazing photographs of National Geographic magazine take us, what horizons will open before us fascinating reports brought from different cities and countries by photographers and photo artists? The answers to these questions will be a selection of the best shots of the week, and today - the first series of photos in the new year, for December 31 - January 06.

Oddities happen, and as always unexpected. So, in 1967, in the Helsinki Kaivopuisto Park, a sudden snow storm covered all the people walking at the May Day demonstration. The event was captured by George Mobley, a 33-year-old photographer working for National Geographic.

A fantastic forest drenched in the sun with amazing trees is not a photo manipulation, but just a good shot of the depths of Cedar Lake on Vancouver Island. Its permanent residents, and today the extras for filming, are river tadpoles, restlessly scurrying between the stalks of lilies.

Instead of bathing a red horse, another performance is popular in India. It is called "Bathing a Black Buffalo". More precisely, three buffaloes, as in the picture with this young fearless shepherd.

In Central Kenya, there is Lake Nakuru National Park, which is famous for the huge number of flamingos that live in its territory. During peak season, more than 1.5 million flamingos gather on the lake, and the surface of the shallow lake is sometimes difficult to see due to the mass of pink. There are also many animals around the lake, including the rare white rhinoceros, and recently the park's management decided to expand the black rhino population. In 2009, there were more than 25 black rhinoceros in the park, about 70 white rhinos, and this is one of the largest populations in the country.

An important, ruffled gentleman on a perch is a common rooster from Brazil, Porto Allegra, Rio Grande do Sul.

A funny photo of a loggerhead sea turtle that always swims in the sea alone, without siblings, rounds out this week's selection.
