But one of the destroyed cities of France will never be rebuilt: it has been turned into a huge memorial, because one of the worst tragedies in Europe took place on its streets
Ruined city of Oradour-sur-Glane located in France, in the province of Limousin. On June 10, 1944, 4 days after the Allied landings in Normandy, SS punishers entered the city. The terrible massacre killed 642 people, including women and children, and destroyed all houses in the town. It is still unclear why the Nazis chose Oradour-sur-Glane to commit one of the worst war crimes in Europe. According to the most reasoned version, the city was simply … confused with the village of Oradour-sur-Ver, next to which the French partisans captured a high-ranking German official.
After the merciless and senseless massacre, the surviving residents of the ruined city of Oradura-sur-Glane did not rebuild in the same place. They built a new village to the northwest of the ruins, and a large memorial was unveiled at the site of the ruins themselves.
This ruined city looks like a ready-made nature for filming a movie about life after the end of the world. Among the "skeletons" of houses, the belongings of the killed are scattered: a stopped clock, half-melted on the hand of a man burnt alive. Charred carcasses. Furniture stained with blood. Children's toys that have outlived their little owners.
The destroyed city of Oradour-sur-Glane is not the only episode of the massacre staged by Nazi punishers: there were many such cities and villages, including in our homeland. Tourists who have visited such memorials are unlikely to ever forget the horrific true face of war.
