We upholstery the doors with the skin of the customer and paint portraits of his ashes. The first is an accordion joke, the second is a homely truth. People send cremated remains and photographs of relatives or pets to the artist Raven Collins, and she creates portraits of the dead, mixing their ashes into paints. Commemorative works of art cost between $ 200 and $ 300 (depending on the size and palette of paintings). Believers and unbelievers, adequate and not so, want to immortalize loved ones in this way.
The 37-year-old artist with more than 15 years of experience has previously painted graphic portraits. Her current work most often includes an unusual ingredient - the cremated remains of people and animals. Raven Collins says that although many are now trying to put unusual material into action. Abstract paintings, jewelry and even crayons from the dust are created, but only Raven Collins specializes in portraits.
The artist came up with the idea a few years ago when grief came to her family. Now portraits of the dead make up 90% of all her works. Orders come through funeral homes, but word of mouth and the Internet provide the lion's share of advertising.
The number of cremations in the world is growing, and the relatives of the deceased are increasingly wondering what to do with the ashes. Not everyone likes the idea of scattering it in the wind (is that respectful enough for the deceased?) Or keeping it at home in an urn, turning their own living room into a crypt.
The demand for cremation is creating supply, and the industry is growing rapidly. About 10 years ago, the first art solutions appeared, because many would have liked the idea of becoming a work of art after death. The specificity of the direction lies in the fact that customers would like to leave fond memories of a relative or a pet, but at the same time observe decency.
Creating unusual portraits is not as difficult as comforting people and talking for hours, agreeing on the concept of future work. Soon after, Raven Collins arrives at a small parcel post with ashes. The artist has a special mortar in which she grinds the grains before adding the liquid. For paint, you need very little material - about a teaspoon. Where does the remainder go? Sometimes it is "scattered" in the corner of the picture, and sometimes it surrounds the drawing with a frame.
Raven Collins hopes that her talent as a portrait painter will bring benefit and comfort to people who have recently faced loss, and her work will reduce the amount of grief on earth.
