Graphic designer for one of the New York clothing companies, author of numerous creative cards and greeting illustrations, artist Maria Danlakis draws inspiration … from the past. While some of her colleagues go to nature for muses, others walk the streets of their hometown, others read fairy tales or local newspapers, Maria prefers to be inspired by a variety of retro things, from classic posters and postcards in pin-up style to costumes from old films. Series of funny illustrations Retro superhero & villains just dedicated to the author's favorite pin-up. Maria depicts each of her heroes in such a way as to show both his "superhero" personality and human. For example, her performance of Batgirl looks like a "cheeky librarian" since this is her real profession, outside of the Justice League of America. Of course, this work required the artist to read a lot of comics about superheroes, but this does not mean that she is a fan of comics. The girl claims to be a fan of everything related to America, but is there anything more American than Superman?

It is the pin-up of the 30s-50s that inspires the artist to work. She says she admires the way the faces of the characters are drawn, in particular those posters by Enoch Bolles. The second source of inspiration for Maria Dunlakis is the big-eyed girls by Margaret Keane. This is probably why we see women-superheroes on the artist's pin-up posters.
