Indian-born British artist Punam Mistry creates remarkable work at the intersection of cultures. These are, for example, unusual illustrations for "Alice in Wonderland", framed by Indian ornament. Drawings by the talented artist, inspired by arts and crafts, are black-and-white and color illustrations in ethnic style.
Punam Mistry, a 23-year-old artist with Indian roots, was born in the UK. Just a year ago, she graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration. In addition to drawings with Indian flavor, recently Punam Mistry has also taken a great interest in making woodcuts and is looking closely at clay sculpture.
Poonam Mistry says that while computer technology has opened up many new possibilities for humans (which is undoubtedly wonderful), at the same time, something important has been lost. The work, entirely by hand, demonstrates real mastery of a brush or pencil. Therefore, the artist herself first makes a drawing on paper, and then digitizes it and brings it to mind in Photoshop.
Interestingly, Poonam Mistry is not particularly keen on the development of modern illustration. She loves sculpture and arts and crafts more (this hobby, of course, is reflected in works in the ethno style). Poonam Mistry believes that the influences of related art forms will only enrich her distinctive drawings.
Punam Mistry tries to diversify and change the palette of colors that are involved in her work. And, although she herself loves warm tones more, the same combinations pretty soon just make the artist sore. Sometimes it is limited to black and white, and sometimes it creates very colorful ethnic illustrations. However, in his work on order, Punam Mistry tries not to overdo it with the number of colors, especially when there are many details in the drawing.
Poonam Mistry admits that she would not like to limit herself to an illustration in the ethno style. Drawings on paper are, of course, wonderful, but after all, there is a sea of different materials in the world, with which it would be a sin not to work. Why not carve wooden toys or work with porcelain and glass? Each material is unique, and the creation of voluminous works prompts us to look at the world differently: not on the plane of paper and not in two dimensions of the desktop.

What is the secret of the art of the Ottoman Empire: When East meets West
Every time when it comes to the Ottoman Empire, images and fantasies about a power inhabited by great sultans, filled with exotic aromas and accompanied by the sounds of a muezzin calling for Islamic prayer immediately pop up in my head. But that is not all. During its heyday, the great Ottoman Empire (circa 1299-1922) spread from Anatolia and the Caucasus through North Africa to Syria, Arabia and Iraq. It brought together many disparate parts of Islamic and Eastern Christianity
The villainous poet, the fugitive writer, the pearl actress. The fates of three famous slaves of the East, West and the New World
From the time of Ancient Egypt to the present day, millions of slaves lived and died unnamed for history. Their lives did not belong to them, their bodies did not belong to them, much less their names belonged to them, they were renamed as easily as a pleasure boat. The brighter the stories of those few who remained in the memory of mankind as something more than an object of purchase and sale, two-legged cattle, powerless property
Ethno illustrations by artist Anneli Akinde in mixed media format
The artist Anneli Akinde, whose work we will tell you about today, is not at all a relative of African shamans, and did not spend her youth in the jungle, among the aborigines of local tribes, playing tam-tam. The girl was born and raised in the Baltic States, studied graphics at the Estonian Academy of Arts, but her paintings are permeated not by their native culture, but for some reason exotic
