The Niger River is the most important waterway in West Africa. The famous historian and philosopher from Timbuktu, Ismael Diadie Haidara, traveled along it. At one time, his Moorish ancestors escaped from Andalusia when the Spanish expelled Muslims from the country. This episode is described in the book Tarikh al-fattash, the history of the Muslim empire of Mali and one of the most important ancient manuscripts of Timbuktu. Photo by Brent Stirton.
