Casa Milà Housealso known as "La Pedrera", can be compared with a pearl from an architectural necklace, which was presented to the beautiful Barcelona by the famous architect Antonio Gaudi … Curvilinear ceilings between the floors seem to keep the memory of the waves of the sea, the vaults are so light that they are carried up into the sky, whimsically curved arches and columns successfully complement this ensemble. Surprisingly, this house, striking with extravagance of style and modern expression, was built a century ago. In 1984, the house became the first of all the architectural monuments built in the twentieth century, which was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
When an unusual building appeared in the center of Barcelona back in 1920, the Spaniards did not at all appreciate the genius of the architect's plan. Casa Mila was perceived as a mockery of the inhabitants of the city, therefore, for many, the building caused only disgust. Local authorities even took a radical step - they fined the owners of the house for violating building codes. Today, the architectural masterpiece of Antoni Gaudí has become the real cultural "heart" of Barcelona: all kinds of exhibitions and cultural events are constantly held here. By the way, not so long ago, in Casa Mila, paper decorations by Sandra Di Hyacinto were demonstrated, which we wrote about on our website Culturology. RU.
Casa Mila is without a doubt one of the most famous symbols of Barcelona. Its unofficial name "La Pedrera", which literally means "quarry", it got due to the fact that the walls of the building are made of solid gray stone, the balconies, more like cave entrances, perfectly complement the visual range.
Inside the building, which has an unusual "circular" shape, there are three courtyards painted in warm colors. Separately, it is worth mentioning the roof: you should look here to see funnier chimney-sculptures, more reminiscent of surrealistic creatures, and also take a look around the city center, because Casa Mila is one of the tallest buildings in the area.
Another feature of the Casa Mila house is the abundance of windows. They are in almost every room, although this was uncharacteristic for the 19th century. The rooms are literally flooded with light, which makes them even more attractive to visitors. Several apartments on the top floor have been turned into a museum, they can be viewed during a guided tour, but the rest are still inhabited by Catalan families, some have become office premises.
It is difficult to overestimate the contribution of Antoni Gaudi to the development of world architecture, because even today his works inspire many creative artists to create real masterpieces. For example, Saimir Strati dedicates breathtaking mosaics to Gaudí, the Moment Factory studio puts on a large-scale projection show at the Sagrada Familia, and Karin Frankenstein creates special "plastic" furniture that resembles the curved facades of buildings designed by the master. Perhaps, to unravel the secret of Gaudi's talent, it is enough to recall his own words: "Originality is a return to the origins."

Why did the architect who created the new look of St. Petersburg leave Russia: Architect Lidval and his magnificent houses
Fyodor Lidval for St. Petersburg is like Lev Kekushev or Fyodor Shekhtel for the capital. If Shekhtel (the same can be said about Kekushev) is the father of Moscow Art Nouveau, then Lidval is the father of St. Petersburg Art Nouveau, or, so to speak, the father of Northern Art Nouveau in the city on the Neva. It was Lidval's buildings that shaped the new look of St. Petersburg at the beginning of the last century, when the streets of the city began to be actively built up with apartment buildings and other large-scale and bold, for those times, buildings

The history of this fortress, unique in its architecture, is even more amazing and fascinating than the plot of the fantasy saga "Game of Thrones"
