If you associate chocolate exclusively with the sweet life and pleasure, then it's time to get acquainted with the work of the American sculptor Stephen J Shanabrook. His chocolate works seduce the sweet tooth with their taste and aroma, but repel with their appearance, in which the author embodies his ideas of violence, cruelty and death.

The work of Stefan Shanabrook can be called shocking and even repulsive somewhere. Take, for example, his famous series of sculptures "Chocolate Box: Morgue". To create it in the 90s of the last century, the author visited many American and Moscow morgues, where he took casts of wounds from dead bodies. Shanabrook then poured the chocolates from these molds and placed them in a luxurious box. I wonder if these sweets could be eaten - would there be a lot of people willing?

In the sculpture "On The Road To Heaven The Highway to Hell", the author depicts the remains of a suicide bomber - life-size and made of the finest dark chocolate. Another piece by Shanabrook is a miniature plastic toy soldier covered with a layer of chocolate. "Battle of Losers and Lovers" is a real battlefield where rivers of chocolate blood flow, and the dead do not even need to be buried, because after a while they will simply melt in the sun.

Here is how the author himself explains the connection between cocoa products and the appearance of his sculptures: “Demonstrating the wounds in the form of a box of chocolates, I make the viewer wish for this cast of a gunshot wound. Even if this candy does not arouse his admiration, it is not so easy to get rid of the desire to eat sweets, and this is where the conflict begins. And the smell of chocolate is often stronger than the hideous appearance."
