At the sound of the phrase "Antique sculptures", a warrior, a farmer, or Venus de Milo with snow-white skin, hair, and generally all entirely snow-white, immediately rises in front of my eyes. It's scary to think, but such a global thing as the color of antique ancient Greek statues, almost until today, was mistakenly thought to have long been unraveled. It turned out that everything is not at all as we mistakenly believed.
It is surprising that scientists for a catastrophic long time did not think about whether after thousands of years, sun, sand, water, and thousands of hands of archaeological students, antique statues remained the same color as they were originally?
The technique, called "Raking Light", involves illuminating sculptures or paintings with an ultraviolet lamp directed almost parallel to the surface of the painting. Thus, the smallest fragments of paint pigments, as well as all kinds of people touching a painting / sculpture, immediately become clearly visible.
Revealing the color of the pigment on the statue is done in the same way. Dark blue has a completely different effect than gold. Research scientists already know how to figure it out. They see the reaction of the chemical composition of the pigment to ultraviolet light and select the composition of this pigment, by hammering shells, stones, flowers, grinding herbs and spices - they get dyes in the same ancient ways.

Not so long ago, another direction has become fashionable - retrofuturism, - the study of prog
