The Spaniards are a temperamental people, apparently, that's why their entertainment amazes with entertainment and massiveness. That only is the legendary Battle of Tomatoes or the Day of Holy Simpletons, the holidays of Saint Fermin and the tradition of Ensierro. Another festival that every two years at the beginning of October gathers thousands of Spaniards in the city of Tarragona is casteller competition … Numerous teams compete in the skill of creating "towers" from human bodies.
The Castellier Competition is a Catalan tradition that goes back more than two centuries. Although even earlier, in the Middle Ages, such "towers" were by no means entertainment - in such a simple way they besieged impregnable fortresses. Today, the competition is held cheerfully and to the music, and not to the rumble of the battle. The number of participants in each team can vary - from 75 to 500! At the bottom, of course, there are heavyweights, and on the upper tier there are graceful girls or even children. Depending on the amount of "building material", the tower can reach from six to ten levels.
It is very exciting to watch the progress of the competition, since all the participants are dressed in bright clothes, and the possibilities of the human body here are revealed from an unprecedented side. One wrong move can cause a huge number of people to fall, so the intensity of passions during the holiday exceeds all permissible norms.
By the way, the jury's assessments take into account not only the whimsicality of the resulting composition, but also how the pyramid was assembled and disassembled, the stable “tower” should not fall apart until all the participants went down each other down to the lower tier. Competitions are very popular among both locals and tourists. They were even included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
