Video: "Illuminarium": glass and light in the work of Tim Tate

Each piece by Tim Tate is a small treasure enclosed in a fragile glass vessel. Anything can be inside a fragile glass shell - for example, a small graceful sculpture or a display with a video. But a real miracle seems to be a new series of works by the author, where each work is filled with light and magic.
This series of glass works is called "Illuminarium", and when it comes to the fact that it is filled with light, then it should be taken literally. By placing intricate colored glass shapes inside each vessel, Tim Tate uses LEDs to illuminate his compositions. Red, green, yellow pieces of glass, shimmering and playing, actually create an atmosphere of miracle and fairy tale.
“I chose the term 'Illuminarium' as the title for my new work,” says Tim Tate. "After all, this word refers not only to the use of light-emitting diodes, but also to the spiritual source of light located inside (English illumination)." The author explains that one day he saw a luminous piece of radium and was seized with awe and delight at the sight of this sight. There is no doubt that with his work, Tim Tate is trying to evoke feelings in the audience, similar to those that he himself once experienced.
Each work by Tim Tate is a vivid example of the combination of glass craftsmanship traditions and modern technology. Along with the emitted light, LEDs provide so little heat that the author places them under glass domes without fear.
The author regrets to say that at present, many do not consider glass as a suitable material for creating real works of art, calling glass work a craft, but not art. “This is a bias,” says Tim and tries to refute it with his work. Does it work? It's up to you to judge. But the Washington Post called Tate "the missing link between craft and high art," and that means something.
Tim Tate lives in Washington DC (USA) and has been creating glass products for the past 25 years. The master is one of the founders of the Washington Glass School, and his works are in the permanent collections of various museums around the world.
