One fine day, or rather, evening, visitors to the famous Australian Hyde Park suffered fear. Huge three-dimensional heads, similar to ghosts, appeared on the green crowns of branchy trees, and began to talk, telling people stories from the life of the city, about its past, present and plans for the future. The attentive reader will notice the similarity of this project with the gargoyles in the trees, performed by Clement Brie. However, an unexpected performance called Emergence arranged by the artist Craig Walsh, one of the participants in the traditional Sydney art project Art & About … The annual Art & About project brings together many street installations created by different artists, and you can never predict what they will come up with this time around. The ghostly faces in the trees in the park Craig Walsh and his team were not chosen by chance. The fact is that the townspeople love Hyde Park not only as a wonderful scenic place for walks, picnics and outdoor recreation, but also as a place for city meetings, rallies and protests, as well as recreational social events. This idea formed the basis of the Emergence art project, since talking heads tell exactly about this role of Hyde Park in the cultural life of Australia and Sydney.
Huge transparent faces on the crowns of trees are an illusion, a phantom, a projection based on the play of light and shadow. By directing specially formed streams of light to the trees, Craig Walsh builds a picture out of light and shadow, which in this case takes the form of a human face. There were three such faces in a Sydney park, and they looked like three ghosts hiding in the branches of massive trees, and then appearing before visitors to the park. It is not surprising that crowds of curious people gathered on the paths of Hyde Park, wanting to see this stunning sight, and many came to Sydney from other cities.
It is known that Craig Walsh has been engaged in light installations for several years, honing his skills every year and surprising the audience with new original ideas. You can get acquainted with the work of the artist and his team on their website.
